Today, on the anniversary of Russia’s brutal invasion, Volodymyr Zelensky issued a somber message of defiance and promised to bring Russian “murderers” to justice. The Ukrainian president praised his country for resisting Vladimir Putin’s forces during “a year of pain, sorrow, faith and unity” as the dawn of a commemorative day broke.

He said in a tearful video address, “We have endured. We were not defeated. And we will do everything to gain victory this year.” He praised towns like Mariupol, Bucha, and Irpin as “capitals of invincibility” and said, “Ukraine has inspired the world. Ukraine has united the world. We will never rest until the Russian murderers face deserved punishment.”

Regarding the Russian attack date of February 24, 2022, Mr. Zelensky stated, ‘We survived the first day of the full-scale war. We didn’t know what tomorrow would bring, but we clearly understood that for each tomorrow, you need to fight. And we fought.”

Today one year ago, hundreds of thousands of people fled into neighboring countries as the first airstrikes struck Ukrainian cities. In the days before the invasion, thousands more people had left in dread. For the Ukrainians who have remained in Ukraine, Russian missiles have destroyed their houses and towns and killed or injured their loved ones.

China, India, and other nations in the global south have shown ambivalence toward Western claims that Ukraine is the front line in a struggle for freedom and democracy, despite the fact that Western nations are backing Ukraine militarily, financially, and politically. By denying Moscow’s largest banks access to the Swift financial network, limiting its access to technology, and limiting its ability to export oil and gas, the West has continued to hit Moscow with sanctions.

What do you think? Can you believe it’s already been one year since the war began and what more can be done to stop Russia from their incursion? Let us know in the comments below.
