Piers Morgan has slammed Thandiwe Newton after the latter apologised for the criticism she had received in response to her new film ‘God’s Country.’

Piers Morgan Blasts Actress Thandiwe Newton For Apologising For Her Movie Role-‘Bonkers’

Thandiwe plays the lead character, who is a black professor that decides to approach two trespassers in her area. While she was promoting the film, Thandiwe admitted that she did consider not being in the movie on the grounds that she was not ‘dark-skinned’ enough.

In an interview, Thandiwe broke down in tears before saying: “I’ve wanted so desperately to apologise every day to darker-skinned actresses. To say, I’m sorry that I’m the one chosen. My mamma looks like you.

“It’s been very painful to have women that look like my mum, feel like I’m not representing them. That I’m taking from them. Taking their men, taking their work, taking their truth. I didn’t mean to.”

Although it was clear that Thandiwe was very emotional about this, Piers did not understand the rationale behind it. He felt that there were many black actors that had successful careers.

Therefore, Thandiwe’s comments could be out of date by virtue of the fact that there has been progress made with regards to diversity.

In a post to his followers on Twitter, Piers remarked: “What on earth is she on about? There are loads of top actresses with darker skin…. and whose men is she taking and why? This is a bonkers clip.”

The response on social media was divisive. A certain subset of people felt that Thandiwe’s comments could lead to more attention being paid for the need to increase inclusivity. Meanwhile, others argued that the claims were exaggerated.

One person wrote: “My daughter works in casting. She tells me that more often than not her clients demand non-white lighter skin over darker skin – hence this actor’s angst. Just look at the TV ads.”

Regardless of whether or not you agree with what Thandiwe has had to say, there is no denying that these comments have created a public discourse around this issue. And if that leads to better representation for all actors, then that can only be a good thing.
