Netflix is diving into the life of former WWE owner and chairman Vince McMahon in a new six part special called ‘Mr. McMahon’.
Over the last forty plus years no one has defined pro wrestling more than Vince McMahon.
He took a regional business and turned it into a worldwide phenomena and entertainment powerhouse.
Along the way, he changed the rules about how wrestling was done. He used every tactic at his disposal and became an icon in many ways.
‘Mr. McMahon’ – Living the dream
McMahon’s rise saw all sorts of success stories, but there was always something in the background waiting to try to derail him.
Whether it was steroids, early deaths, his own arrogance, or what ever was coming next, he was at the center of it all.
He wanted to take the WWE and pro wrestling mainstream and he did, and those hurdles came along for the ride.
On their youtube description, Neflix states:
“Mr. McMahon chronicles the rise and fall of Vince McMahon, controversial businessman and co-founder of WWE. From his transformation of the WWE from a small, regional business into a global entertainment powerhouse to the explosive sexual misconduct allegations that led to his eventual resignation, this six-episode series offers a deep dive into McMahon’s life and his enduring franchise. Culled from over 200 hours of interviews with McMahon himself (prior to his resignation), his family members, business associates and some of the most iconic names in wrestling history, as well as the journalists who uncovered McMahon’s allegations — filmmaker Chris Smith (Tiger King) and executive producer Bill Simmons (30 for 30) present an unflinching, no-holds-barred look at one of the most enigmatic figures in sports entertainment.”
‘Mr. McMahon’ – The end of a run
The video hints that the Netflix special ‘Mr. McMahon’ will touch on the end of his run in WWE.
Namely, the numerous allegations of sexual misconduct that were mostly settled out of court.
But there were other instances along the way as he built his empire. Like the Jimmy Snuka case where Snuka allegedly killed his girlfriend and Vince allegedly intervened.
The steroid abuse Vince was put on trial for, and the near constant run of early deaths. While many attribute those deaths to the lifestyle of steroids, drugs, and alcohol, the schedule can’t be ignored.
Wrestlers were on the road over 300 days a year, constantly grinding to keep the WWE machine rolling.
In an interview Vince didn’t some across well when the reporter questioned how he felt no responsibility for their deaths due to the schedule.
Wrestling as long been its own animal that’s sports, performance, entertainment, and so much more mixed together.
Vince did a masterful job of bringing it into the main stream and gave us some of the best memories of our lives. So many moments we’ll never forget.
But is his legacy tarnished? We’re sure the documentary will bring that up, but what do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
