Draymond Green’s—who is best known for being an NBA star for the Golden State Warriors—defence of his teammate Andrew Wiggins over the latter’s decision not to take the covid 19 vaccine was not enough to stop Andrew from taking it.
NBA Star Draymond Green’s Comments Were Not Enough To Stop His Team Mate Andrew Wiggins From Being Pressured To Take The Covid 19 Vaccine
Draymond’s comments came in response to the growing pressure being placed on athletes to take the vaccine or face potential restrictions on their careers.
And given that Andrew had recently welcomed the birth of his child, Draymond made sure that he backed up a close friend. In an interview with ESPN, Draymond had said: “[That] would be like me telling him, ‘Yo, your wife is going into labour.
“How dare you leave this team and not go tend to your wife? That’s something that’s personal to him. That’s something that’s health-related. That’s something that’s personal to his family. This is no different.”
Nevertheless, the pressure did get too much for Andrew. He decided to weigh up the benefits of such a decision. Naturally, if he did not take it, then he would lose out on a potential $31 million.
And given that NBA careers can be short-lived, with no guarantee of future earnings, Andrew made the decision to take the vaccine.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Andrew said: “The only options were to get vaccinated or not play in the NBA. It was a tough decision. Hopefully, it works out in the long run, and in 10 years, I’m still healthy.”
Despite Andrew’s decision, his comments do raise significant concerns about freedom of choice. And given that such a high profile player has taken this stance, it has set the precedent of people renouncing their rights for money.
Regardless of what Andrew did, there would be some criticism. His following comments suggested that he did regret it. He added: “I guess to do certain stuff, to work, I guess you don’t own your body.
“That’s what it comes down to…There’s a lot of people out there that are stronger than me and keep fighting, stand for what they believe, and hopefully, it works out for them.”
Time will tell whether Andrew’s decision goes on to impact other NBA players. If you liked reading this article, then check out our other features on the Daily Soap Dish.
