When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry in 2018, she may have walked into the British monarchy expecting something closer to a Disney movie than the rigid institution she found herself in, according to royal insiders.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex shook the royal establishment when they abandoned their senior roles in 2020 to carve out a new life in the U.S. But now, fresh commentary from royal experts suggests Meghan’s expectations of palace life were wildly different from reality.
Meghan Markle Believed She Would Live the Fairytale Princess Life As a Royal When She Married Prince Harry
Helena Chard, a British broadcaster who has long covered the royal family, claimed Meghan saw the idea of becoming a princess as “sparkly and fun,” likening it to stepping into a fairytale role. “She likes to be center stage,” Chard told Fox News, adding that Meghan wanted freedom to do things on her own terms. Unfortunately, as Chard explained, royal life doesn’t bend to personal whims.
Grant Harrold, a former royal butler and author of The Royal Butler, backed up that point with a telling anecdote. He recalled that Meghan once wanted to invite friends for lunch on the same day she was scheduled for an official engagement. That, he said, is simply “not how it works.” Royal calendars are fixed months in advance, and even small deviations are off-limits.
Harrold suggested Meghan may have imagined royal life like that of an animated princess—lavish, flexible, and glamorous—only to be met with a maze of protocols, obligations, and centuries-old expectations.
Harry’s Role and Meghan’s Disillusionment
Chard also speculated that Harry likely warned Meghan about the challenges of life inside “The Firm,” but the actress-turned-duchess still may have been chasing a fantasy. Once the crown’s realities set in, the sparkle faded quickly.
By early 2020, the Sussexes had officially stepped away from their duties, marking one of the most dramatic exits in modern royal history. What started as Meghan’s dream of stepping into a fairytale ended in a transatlantic escape from the very system she thought would deliver it.
