Princess Diana was known for her selfless charity work, her warmth and kindness, and, of course, her impeccable style and fashionable appearance. She was always so well and carefully put together.
Keeping Princess Diana’s Memory Alive
Palace aides and officials want to keep Diana’s memory alive, even through The Duchess of Sussex and the Princess of Wales. Diana’s appeal goes back decades, as she will forever be known as “The People’s Princess.”
Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton were encouraged to copy Princess Diana’s style, as Omid Scobie explains in his book, “Endgame.”
According to the royal biographer, Kate and Meghan were given photographs of the late Princess of Wales to help spark ideas for an effortless Princess Diana-like result with a fresh modern spin.
William and Harry were consulted whenever their advisors told them to dress like Princess Diana. Who better to help the two royal women channel their late mother-in-law than her sons?
Scobie writes when planning outfits for Meghan and Kate.
“It had been known for someone to go back and pull images of Diana at a certain place or time for ideas”
Princess Kate is particularly tasteful in her wardrobe choices, and her emulation of Diana is no exception. Kate likes to wear Diana-style elegant ballgowns and charming little dresses.
Kate looked pretty in pink, dazzling in an Alexandar McQueen flamingo pink outfit with a matching hat and almost identical baby pink purse.
Diana wore a red plaid tartan dress. Kate wore a comparable red and black houndstooth dress designed by Alessandra Rich. They both accessorized with a lovely pair of black stilettos.
Kate and Meghan’s Princess Diana Inspiration Has Different Results
In 1985, Diana wore a jaw-droppingly stunning metallic silver gown, while Kate took a similar approach by wearing a gorgeous glittery gold Jeny Packham dress entitled “Goldfinger”.
Both dresses have a charming V-neck and delicately padded shoulders.
Meghan Markle tends to opt for more casual pieces mixed with a touch of modern glamor.
Meghan wore a smart black blazer and hat like Diana wore when she attended Remembrance Day commemorations.
While in Hong Kong in 1989, Princess Diana wore a purple and red ensemble. Meghan had a comparable appearance with a fetching red coat and purple dress.
During Diana’s first pregnancy with her son, William, she wore a perfectly put-together emerald green ensemble. During Meghan’s pregnancy with her first child, Archie, she wore a strikingly similar ensemble that looked classically beautiful.
Princess Diana wore spectacular evening gowns, and Meghan took her Diana inspiration to a new level when getting gussied up.
The two women also have some jewelry pieces from Princess Diana’s collection. Princess Kate wore Diana’s famous tiara, the Lover’s Knot.
However, Scobie points out there is a fine line between emulation and “cosplay.” It is like dressing up like a movie character who isn’t real.
The main difference between Kate’s tribute to Princess Diana and Meghan’s is that Meghan set out to copy Princess Diana to land Prince Harry.
There have been accounts that she even went as far as to purchase Diana’s favorite perfume and wear it on her first date with Harry—scary stuff.
