President Joe Biden asserted this week that a nurse once “breathed on him” to hasten his recovery from a brain aneurism in the 1980s. He made the absurd statements on Wednesday in a speech about healthcare availability in America in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Biden told everyone, “I had a nurse named Pearl Nelson. She’d come in and do things I don’t think you learn in nursing school. She’d whisper in my ear, I couldn’t understand, but she’d whisper and she’d lean down. And actually breathe on me to make sure there was a connection, a human connection.”

Dr. April Haberyan, an assistant professor of clinical nursing at the University of Rochester in New York, nurses frequently try to establish “therapeutic relationships” with patients by making them feel at ease. Although whispering can make a patient feel less anxious, she said it would be unusual to breathe on a patient. “We would not breathe on a patient. No,” she replied.
She added that it would be deemed crossing the line if a nurse comforted a patient by breathing directly onto them. In his comments, President Biden mentioned the medical attention he got after suffering from two potentially fatal brain aneurysms in 1988.
He’s lately been charged with forgetting specifics. This includes addressing a gathering in September by referencing Rep. Jackie Waloski, who had just passed away in a car accident, and claiming to have visited a black church when he was younger. The President claimed that his nurse in 1988 even gave him a pillow from her home after he found the one at the hospital uncomfortable during his address on healthcare access in America on Tuesday.
