Friends star Matthew Perry has died at age 54 from a perceived heart attack. Various sources first reported that the actor died from an apparent drowning at his home in his jacuzzi.

It has been determined that he died at his home after playing two hours of pickleball. His assistant found him unresponsive and called 911. First responders came over right away.

It was first reported that no drugs or foul play were found at the scene. However, it is unclear at this time if what the actor had been doing before his passing may have contributed to his death.

Matthew Perry Played Chandler on Friends

Matthew Perry was best known for playing Chandler Bing on the popular 90’s sitcom “Friends,” which ran from September 1994 to May 2004.

Chandler was a beloved character on the show. He also acted in numerous TV shows, like “Silver Spoons,” “Charles in Charge,” “Beverly Hills 90210,” and “Scrubs.”He played in notable films like “Fools Rush In” and “17 Again.”

Unfortunately, Perry also made headlines due to his struggle with alcohol and drugs. He did a stint in rehab in 1997 for an opioid addiction and then went back to rehab in 2001 and 2011.

He battled addiction for decades and has been candid about his issues. Perry once admitted he did not remember about three years of filming Friends due to his alcoholism. He battled his addictions to alcohol and pain medication during that time.

At first, like most actors, he tried to keep his troubles hidden. He has also admitted that by the time he was 18, he was drinking every day. He said he was never drunk while filming Friends but was often “painfully hungover.”

Perry published a book last year in which he details his struggles. His book was called, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir.”

Matthew Was Honest About His Addiction

His honesty about his alcoholism was commendable. He talked about the addictions that nearly cost him his life. He said he had been to rehab a total of 15 times to try to get clean.

His colon ruptured due to his opioid addiction when he was 49. He was in a coma for two weeks and was not expected to survive.

Matthew needed 14 surgeries to correct the damage to his abdomen. He said he was taking 55 Vicodin each day, and he couldn’t stop.

Perry even admitted to going to real estate open houses, not because he was interested in purchasing property, but to see if he could snatch up some drugs from medicine cabinets.

He also said he was never a party person. He preferred taking Vicodin and watching a movie.

Perry said he had been clean since early 2021, shortly before shooting the Friends reunion.

Matthew Perry was also known for some of his high-profile relationships. He dated actress Julia Roberts in the ’90s and was linked to actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, “Baywatch’s” Yasmine Bleeth, and “Party of Five’s” Neve Campbell.

Most notably, Perry’s most significant relationship was with “Mean Girls” actress Lizzy Caplan. They kept their relationship under wraps for a long time.

Investigation concerning his death is currently underway. Perry was a very funny and talented comedian and will be missed.
