Margaritaville Creator; Legendary singer Jimmy Buffett has died at age 76. Known for his “beach bum soft rock” hits, he made devoted “Parrotheads” out of his many faithful fans. Everyone is familiar with the song “Margaritaville.”
The song is famous for trumpeting fun in the sun and endless frozen drinks. Buffett, a performer for five decades, passed away on September 1st, 2023.
He was with his family, friends, dogs, and music when he died. News of his death spread quickly on his website and social media, although his cause of death is still unknown.

Jimmy was born in 1946, on Christmas Day, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, to parents Mary Lorraine and James Delany Buffett Jr.
He grew up in Alabama and attended Catholic school. He learned to play trombone and was in the school band.
His grandfather was a captain on a steamship, and he often took Jimmy sailing, which impacted his easy, breezy music. Jimmy had a fascination with the water and new and exciting adventures.
In college, he learned how to play the guitar. He started having a band and busking on the streets of New Orleans and quickly became a favorite in nightclubs.
After college, he traveled to Nashville to make his first record. A Key West, Florida trip inspired Jimmy to create different music.
He loved the laid-back lifestyle so much that he moved to Key West in the early 1970’s.
Margaritaville Creator: The Dawn of The Parrotheads
Buffett’s music became an anthem for drunken tropical and Caribbean excursions. Thus, the term “Parrotheads” was born.
Jimmy had many hit songs that became popular in the 1970s. His sixth album, Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, was legendary.
His most beloved song, “Margaritaville,” came out in 1977. It solidified a permanent place for him in mainstream music history.
The inspiration for Margaritaville came to him one night while drinking margaritas in a bar in Austin, Texas. The song was about “wasting away” at a beach resort and pondering about his life.
His next album was also a monster hit. His next most famous song, “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” went platinum.
In 1985, he opened a store in Key West called Margaritaville. The hospitality company manages and franchises a restaurant chain and hotels and sells merchandise.
In the 1990s, he made his business bigger by adding a tequila and beer brand to his repertoire of Jimmy Buffett-themed products.
There is even a Margaritaville radio station and a musical based on the timeless song.
Margaritaville Creator: Awards and Recognition
Buffett made a couple of hit albums in the 90s that received modest radio airplay. Returning to his roots during the 2000s, he collaborated with various country artists.
“It’s Five O’clock Somewhere” won him a CMA award in 2003. His 2004 album, “License to Chill,” made it to number one on the Billboard charts.
He continued to make records, and as of this year, the Library of Congress inducted his treasured song, Margaritaville, into the National Recording Registry.
Buffett was hospitalized twice in 2022. His health began declining, and he had to stall his tour in May 2023.
The last time Buffett was onstage was in Rhode Island in July. He died peacefully at age 76 and is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Buffett was a true talent who encouraged many followers to lead a happy, fun lifestyle. He will be missed.
