Maren, for her part, is known for being a massive advocate of the LGBTQIA+ community. That is why she had a lot say about Candace’s comments in which she suggested that her decision to leave the Hallmark Channel for the Great American Family network was because they did not put same-sex couples at the forefront of their ventures.
This was because they were ensuring that they would “keep traditional marriage at the core.” So in order to hit back at Candace, Maren suggested a remake of Candace’s character in the show, ‘The Fuller House’ with a twist. In her comments, Maren said: “Make DJ [Tanner] gay again.”
Candace has already tried to reassure her fans that her comments had been blown out of proportion. She was very vocal about how the media were attempting to divide people, while also maintaining that she ‘loved’ all those regardless of their background. And yet, that only went on to fuel the flames.
Matt Bernstein was adamant that Candace’s comments were out of touch, and he let her know in no uncertain terms that she had to accept the way that television was moving forward. Otherwise, she could end up being out of touch.
In response to the controversy, Matt remarked: “You went decades without ever having to see an LGBTQ character on screen. Now, we’re in 1 out of 5 movies. Sorry if this disturbs you. Sending thoughts and prayers.”
The fans on social media were outraged by what Maren had to say. A significant proportion of the fan base defended Candace, who they felt simply wanted to work on other projects. One person wrote: “Why don’t they just leave her alone? She’s a Christian who wants to do Christian content.”
