Luigi Mangione, the man accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has reportedly retained Craig Rothfeld, the renowned prison consultant who previously advised disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein.

Rothfeld, who served time in prison for white-collar crimes, has become a sought-after consultant for high-profile individuals facing incarceration. He has previously spoken candidly about the realities of prison life, describing it as a “Byzantine black hole” where individuals are stripped of their power and autonomy.

“I’m talking to him about the first 90 days,” Rothfeld said of Weinstein’s experience in prison, “They’re very dark. They’re very uncomfortable because you’re on buses in handcuffs and leg shackles. You can’t get packages. It’s very scary. What it will be like for him is — you’re powerless.”

Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges, is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Notably, this facility is also home to another high-profile inmate, Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is awaiting trial on sex trafficking and racketeering charges.

Weinstein, who is serving a lengthy prison sentence for sex crimes, has also faced significant health challenges behind bars. He has been hospitalized multiple times for various ailments, including heart surgery, diabetes, spinal stenosis, and cancer. His legal team has repeatedly raised concerns about the quality of his medical care in prison, even filing a $5 million lawsuit against the state of New York alleging medical negligence.

“Mr. Weinstein, who is suffering from a number of illnesses, including leukemia, has been deprived the medical attention that someone in his medical state deserves, prisoner or not,” stated his spokesperson, Juda Engelmayer.

Mangione‘s decision to retain Rothfeld suggests a proactive approach to navigating the complexities of prison life. Rothfeld’s expertise in guiding high-profile individuals through the challenges of incarceration could prove invaluable to Mangione as he faces the uncertainties of his legal proceedings.
