Lizzo Controversially Claims 'Cancel Culture Is Appropriation'

On Sunday, 8th January 2023, Lizzo commented on the idea of cancel culture, claiming that it had been taken advantage of to such an extent that it had been “appropriated”.

She went on to say that it had become fashionable and incorrectly utilised. In her comments, she said: “This may be a random time to say this but it’s on my heart… cancel culture is appropriation.

“There was real outrage from truly marginalised people and now it’s become trendy, misused and misdirected.” The star expressed her wish that society will be able to move away from this issue and concentrate our indignation on the actual difficulties.

Much in the same way, Kate Hudson, aged 43, expressed her opinion on the ongoing discussion about whether or not to cancel public figures, and showed her support for this idea. This was a very strong statement indeed since being cancelled is not something that should be done lightly.

This is especially if further evidence coming to light could prove that the said person was not liable for what was claimed, and yet, there would be no way of repairing the damage that may have been done.

In some comments at the time, Hudson remarked: “We should hold people accountable who do anything that’s sexist, misogynistic, or racist… Kanye should be held accountable for his behaviour. Period.”

The fans on social media, though, differed with what Lizzo had to say. A certain subset of people were accusing Lizzo of jumping on the bandwagon of cancel culture in order to exploit it for publicity.

One person wrote: “The real problem?… that would be people like her who make everything into a race issue, Lizzo is an unhealthy role figure who race baits to get attention. she should be cancelled.”

Lizzo certainly has her position, but it has not gone down well. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. If you liked reading this article, then check out our other features on the Daily Soap Dish.
