Lizzo Bashes Claims That Her Music Is For A 'White Crowd'

Lizzo has bashed claims that her music is allegedly catered towards white people.

The singer took this as a negative criticism since she is one of the most popular black artists out there. But given that she has such a wide fan base, this has inadvertently been interpreted as her catering her music away from black people.

This is a misconception that she wanted to clear up by letting everybody know in no uncertain terms that her music was based upon her personal experiences. In an interview with  Vanity Fair, she said: “When Black people see a lot of white people in the audience, they think, ‘Well this isn’t for me, this is for them.

“The thing is, when a Black artist reaches a certain level of popularity, it’s going to be a predominantly white crowd.” In order to defend her position, Lizzo name-checked several other stars who had managed to captivate such a widespread fan base.

This included Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Beyoncé and Diana Ross. In addition, Lizzo’s music taste is quite eclectic with hits ranging in various genres such as hip-hop and gospel. This latter point was also seen when she was in high school, as Lizzo admitted that she was in a rock band.

Her following comments confirmed as much: “I kept it hidden, even when I was in a rock band, because I didn’t want to be made fun of by my peers—they’d yell, ‘White girl!’”

The fans on social media felt that Lizzo had an obligation towards all of her fans. As a result, they felt that she should shy away from trying to make this into a conversation about race which would only alienate people. One person wrote: “Keep RACE Out of it Please.”

As long as Lizzo is making music that she enjoys, then who are we to question otherwise. And that is the most important thing to remember. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
