A large proportion of the British population believes that it is not appropriate for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s children to be referred to as Prince or Princess.
Latest Poll Shows That British Public Don’t Want Archie And Lilibet To Have Titles
Last week, the couple referred to their one-year-old daughter, Lilibet, as ‘Princess’ in the announcement of her christening.
A representative later explained that these titles were rightfully bestowed upon both of the couple’s children and the official website of the Royal Family, which displays the order of succession, was subsequently modified to reflect this.
In some comments, a representative said: “The children’s titles have been a birthright since their grandfather became Monarch. This matter has been settled for some time in alignment with Buckingham Palace.”
When King Charles III became the monarch, Archie and Lilibet were granted the titles of prince and princess respectively, as per the letters patent formulated by George V in 1917.
These letters patent were designed to bestow the title to all the male-line grandchildren of the monarch, leaving no room for any exclusion or omission.
Charles would have needed to release additional letters patent to stop the children from using the titles if he wanted to reverse this decision.
The decision to use the titles of prince or princess for the children of Meghan and Harry has sparked a lot of discussion and disagreement, with some critics labeling it as hypocritical, while others argue that it is consistent with previous practices.
According to a recent survey carried out by YouGov, more than half of the participants (51%) believe that it is not appropriate for Archie and Lilibet to be given their respective titles.
In comparison, only 25 % felt it was the right thing. When asked about whether Archie and Lilibet should receive titles, the respondents who were in favor of it were distributed across various age groups.
The age group of 18-24 and 65+ had an equal percentage of 22% each, while the highest percentage of 28% came from the age group of 25-49.
Therefore, the respondents who favored Archie and Lilibet receiving titles were spread across different age brackets.
The social media response was much the same. A certain subset felt that since the Sussexes wanted a life away from the firm, then that should apply to all parts of it, including the titles.
One person wrote: “No titles for the children of these hypocrites, attention addicts.” So there you have it folks.
