The first photos have emerged of Kristen Stewart in her new role as Princess Diana in an upcoming biopic.  And they are kind of jaw-dropping.

The movie Spencer is not about the untimely death of the ‘People’s Princess’ but centers around three pivotal days (over Christmas) when Lady Diana Spencer realizes that she must reevaluate her marriage and life’s trajectory.

“We decided to get into a story about identity, and around how a woman decides somehow, not to be the queen,” said director Pablo Larraín who is best known for directing Natalie Portman in the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis biopic, Jackie.

“It’s about finding herself, about understanding that possibly the most important thing for her is to be well, and to be with herself and by herself,” Larraín said. “That’s why the movie is called Spencer, which is the family name she had before she met Charles.”

With The Crown continuing to be wildly popular on Netflix, it shows there is room for more movies about the tragic figure, but the casting of Stewart, best known for her role as Bella Swan in the Twilight saga raised many eyebrows. While many panned her for her acting, others believed a British actress should have been selected for the role.

“The accent is intimidating as all hell because people know that voice,” Stewart admitted. “It’s so, so distinct and particular. I’m working on it now and already have my dialect coach.”

Stewart is sad to be thrilled about the role. “I haven’t been this excited about playing a part in so long,” she told Jimmy Kimmel in an interview.

Director Larraín is confident in his star, saying that Stewart embodies the mysteriousness of the Princess, along with her paradoxical fragility yet strength.

While there is much debate about whether Stewart can pay suitable homage to the beloved and complex woman, we’ll all have to wait and see how the biopic turns out. Spencer is currently filming in Germany with no release date set as yet. For now we have to settle for photographs and even the Stewart haters have to admit- she does have the look down pat!
