In Colchester, England, a large crowd of individuals gathered with the hope of catching a sight of King Charles III during his royal visit.

The monarch and his spouse, Queen Consort Camilla, visited the city to commemorate its recent recognition as a city, to tour a library, and to reveal the name of a newborn rhinoceros at the local zoo.

When Charles attended the engagements on Tuesday, 7th March 2023, a strange occurrence took place. A group of approximately twelve people had assembled to welcome the king, but they held up signs which read the following: “Not My King.”

Graham Smith, who leads Republic, a group advocating for the replacement of the monarchy with a democratically elected head of state, arranged the protests. According to Smith, the Republic has experienced a surge in momentum following the death of the late Queen Elizabeth.

The movement has been able to garner increased financial support and recruit more individuals to its cause since then. Smith’s following comments confirmed as much: “Charles has not inherited the respect and deference and sycophancy that the Queen enjoyed. And it’s a very different environment in which to campaign now.”

It was uncommon for people to protest against the deceased queen, but a few supporters of the Republic seem to be planning to protest against Charles wherever he goes. During his recent visit to Milton Keynes, there were also some yellow placards being held up in the air by protesters.

Additionally, during two of his initial public appearances as king, he was targeted by people throwing eggs at him. Liz Stephens, who also happens to be part of Republic, had this to say: “I think the relationship is changing.

“I think there was a great loyalty to the queen … but society has changed. Which is why opinion is changing. The Royal Family is not representative of the society we live in.”
