It looks like another one bites the dust. There’s a new report that says Joni Mitchell is following in the footsteps of Neil Young by yanking her music off of Spotify because of COVID-19 vaccination misinformation concerns. Well, mostly Joe Rogan and his hugely popular podcast is what people seem to be quite upset about. Here’s what you need to know.
“Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives,” the Canadian musician wrote in a statement posted on her website Friday. “I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue.”
Joni Mitchell Yanks Her Music Off Spotify Over Joe Rogan’s COVID-19 Misinformation Concerns
Joni Mitchell’s move comes after Neil Young had requested his managers and record label order the immediate removal of all his songs from Spotify, due to vaccine misinformation propagated by comedian and podcaster Joe Rogan.
Spotify confirmed Young’s actions in a statement to the press, saying that the company “regret[s] Neil’s decision to remove his music” from the streaming service:
“We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users. With that comes great responsibility in balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators. We have detailed content policies in place and we’ve removed over 20,000 podcast episodes related to COVID since the start of the pandemic. We regret Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify, but hope to welcome him back soon.”
The Joe Rogan Experience – reportedly downloaded almost 200 million times a month – is Spotify’s most popular, with its host having attracted criticism for his views on Covid, including a suggestion that young and healthy should not get jabbed.
The streaming company has now confirmed it has removed over 20,000 podcast episodes related to Covid misinformation since the start of the pandemic and hoped to welcome Young back soon. It’s without a doubt they’ll say the same about Joni Mitchell. However, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek announced updates to the platform’s policies, including the addition of content advisories for podcast episodes that discuss COVID-19.
