Johnny Depp is adamant that it was Amber Heard who cut off his finger when she threw a vodka bottle at him during a heated argument. Here’s what you need to know.
Depp says that it was Heard who had cut off his finger, while she says that he did it to himself. However, a text message from Depp to his physician at the time read, “I cut the top of my middle finger off … What should I do!??” Depp testified that when he was later examined by the doctor at the home where he was staying, he told the doctor what happened.

“When you saw the damage in the house and the blood everywhere and obviously there was serious damage everywhere, there would be no point in lying to the man. He’d been through it with me and Ms. Heard before,” Depp testified. “I told him that she had thrown a bottle of vodka and smashed and cut my finger off. The tip of my finger. A good chunk. I miss it.”
However, an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hand surgery, who was hired by Heard’s team as an expert witness, testified on Monday that the injuries Depp sustained to his finger were not consistent with his allegation that Heard slammed his hand with a glass vodka bottle, something Depp disputed on the stand Wednesday.
As many fans know by now, Depp filed the defamation suit against Heard over a column she wrote for the Washington Post in December 2018 in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”
However, Heard never named Depp, whom she met in 2009 on the set of the film The Rum Diary, but he sued her for implying he was a domestic abuser and is seeking $50 million in damages. Heard has countersued, asking for $100 million and claiming she suffered “rampant physical violence and abuse” at his hands.
“Nothing less than everything,” he replied. “When the allegations were rapidly circling the globe, telling people that I was a drunken cocaine-fuelled menace who beat women – suddenly in my 50s – it’s over.”
