On Friday, 25th November 2022, Trudeau began to testify in Ottawa about his decision to remove the convoy as part of an investigation into whether or not he abused his powers as Prime Minister.
Major trade routes between Canada and the United States were closed for more than three weeks as a result of trucker protests. All border blockades, however, were lifted on February 14.
Washington was ‘very, very, very worried’ about a group of Canadian vehicles that recently drove across the U.S.-Canada border, according to Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
Brian Deese, Biden’s top economic advisor, was concerned about the blockades and said they could cost around $2.9billion in trade that day, as Freeland sought to allay fears.
According to POLITICO, a call was arranged to allow Trudeau to end the convoy protest, with the former being given a plan of action. Trudeau used the Emergencies Act, which has rarely ever been utilised, to end the demonstrations.
The law was used to freeze bank accounts, bar people from attending the demonstrations, and compel towing services to remove cars from the roadblocks. An inquiry will look into whether Trudeau acted outside his powers.
The social media response was mixed. A certain subset of people felt that Biden had overstepped the mark by interfering in another country’s affairs. Meanwhile, others laughed at the prospect of Biden having mental cognition due to concerns over his cognitive abilities.
One user wrote: “Seems kinda fascist and dictatorial,” while another remarked: “Biden’s dementia is so bad he couldn’t tell Trudeau a thing.” The only thing left to do is let the authorities investigate and come to a conclusion based on the evidence. Time will tell how it all plays out.
