If there’s one thing Hollywood and streaming services don’t seem to understand is when they take a beloved childhood franchise and butcher it while lying to the fans about what they intend to do they take heat.
More than heat, fans tune them out.
In the lead up to “Masters of the Universe: Revelation”, Kevin Smith swore up and down he was a fan of the franchise and it would do justice to the original series. He also helped market it by not saying it was the Teela show and not He-Man.
Is “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” a Rehashing of Revelation’s Mistakes?
Just a couple of miscues made to sucker, er, entice fans to watch it.
Of course, things went sideways when fans discovered it was the Teela show — which would’ve been fine had they marketed as such — and Smith had no clue about the franchise.
The fact Revelation more closely followed the 2002 reboot that was actually very well done more than the original was another misstep, but at least both were represented and the 1990 series was left forgotten.
Aside from mediocre voice acting, dues ex machina used regularly to get characters out of tough spots, killing fan favorite characters, powers changing to fit the plot in mid scene, and making He-Man obsolete by the end of it, it had its moments.
So will Revolution be a rehashing?
It has to be better
Like with Revelation, Revolution’s trailer showing He-Man and King Randor in an Iron Man suit battling Scare Glow looks awesome. If there’s one huge bonus to this series if the animation has been top notch since the beginning.
Unfortunately, the comments on the above video from Netflix’s official Youtube demonstrate fans have no faith in the show and don’t care.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, right?
To be honest, it has to be better. There’s almost no way Kevin Smith and company didn’t learn from the disaster that was Revelation. Well…
Since Hollywood and production companies have shown absolutely no regard for fans of our beloved franchises like Jem, Transformers, GI Joe, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc and fail to do service to the source material we’re skeptical.
We’ll give it a chance, but our biggest question is what is He-Man’s role? Seriously.
The Sorceress was supremely powerful, but she had to stay in Castle Grayskull or her power would dramatically weaken.
But she was killed off and her daughter, Teela, took her place as was hinted at from the beginning of the original series, but she’s not limited to having to be in Grayskull.
Since He-Man was the Sorceress’ champion to do battle outside Grayskull’s walls due to her being bound to the castle, and Teela isn’t bound, He-Man serves no purpose.
None. Nadda. Zippo.
Except to draw us in with arguably a majority of his screen time shown in the official trailer.
This is a case of hope for the best, prepare us for the worst. Or wait for others to watch it and share what it’s about like with Revelation.
