As we all know, David Letterman left The Late Show years ago and hasn’t really looked back. Sure, he has his own netflix show but it’s not a nightly thing. In fact he only interviews guests once in a blue moon and from what I can see, the show has a much different format than the show he hosted at CBS and, in the early years, NBC.

There’s no comedy, it’s straight-up interviews. So color me surprised when someone on twitter dug up an old interview of Lindsay Lohan on the Late Show in 2013 and was promptly horrified by the line of questions that Letterman was asking Lohan.

What are we gonna do, cancel Letterman – again?

The thing is, they must have not being paying attention back then because for quite awhile in American History the Letterman show was a daily occurence, five days a week, and Letterman kind of treated all the guests in the same fashion.

So, I’m not sure what sort of kinder, gentler, more woke version of Letterman that they were expecting but it certainly didn’t exist back in 2013. We also have to take into account that we didn’t know the things about mental health that we do now, back then, if you were a celebrity with a mental health crisis then you not only made yourself the laughing stock of the tabloids but late night TV also made fun of you too.

That was just a fact of life, and it’s still kind of true today, however Letterman did take things in the interview a little far.

But I will credit him with the fact that in the end, he gave Lindsay the list of topics that they were supposed to discuss in the interview and let her choose which ones she wanted to talk about. That was about as woke as you were going to get for 2013. She chose to talk about the movie she was going to star in, and he even let her call him out on-air for being mean.

Now, in a weird way, I call that taking accountability. He could have continued the line of questioning which she found hurtful, but instead he let her pick and let her call him out. I’m glad she did because everyone has a right to feel comfortable in those kinds of situations, however I don’t see what kind of difference it’s going to make bringing attention to it now.

It could serve as a guide for other, future late night hosts as to what not to do when interviewing guests or maybe networks could use it as some sort of sensitivity training. However, if people are looking to cancel and already cancelled late-night host? I think the point is pretty redundant. Case closed.
