Mastersons’ wife, Bijou Phillips, has filed for divorce after Masterson was sentenced to 30 years to life for two counts of rape he committed between 2001 to 2003.
The reason cited for the divorce is “irreconcilable differences.” The filing surprised many because headlines suggested that Phillips would be “standing by her man” while he was in prison.
However, common sense seems to have prevailed. Masterson reportedly used his position with the Church of Scientology to get away with his crimes.
Devastation for Bijou Phillips Who Has Filed for Divorce
Masterson did not testify in court but insisted he was innocent. When the judge read the sentence in court, Phillips was devastated and claimed she had no plans of divorcing her husband.
The judge even had to warn Phillips to keep her composure as they read the sentence because she was crying so hard.
Phillips wrote a letter to the judge about how wonderful Masterson is and how he is such a great father and husband. She said in her letter that Masterson is a “lifesaving partner.”
Masterson was also spied on blowing a kiss to his wife as he was being hauled off to prison. She was planning on having her lawyer try to appeal the sentence.
Fellow actors from That 70’s Show, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, also wrote letters attesting to Masterson’s character and saying how Masterson was such a good influence on them and how he encouraged them to stay away from drugs.
Phillip’s attorney explained, “Ms. Phillips has decided to file for divorce from her husband during this unfortunate time. Her priority remains with her daughter. This period has been unimaginably hard on the marriage and the family. Mr. Masterson was always present for Ms. Phillips during the most difficult times of her life. Ms. Phillips acknowledges that Mr. Masterson is a wonderful Father to their daughter.”
Bijou Phillips Rethinks Her Decision
During the trial, Masterson’s victims described in detail how they were drugged and raped by him. It is possible that these accountings made Phillips realize just who she is married to, and she decided to get a divorce.
Masterson and Phillips were married in Ireland in 2011. Their daughter, Fianna, was born in 2014. Phillips’s petition requested spousal support and that her name be restored to Bijou Phillips.
She also wants legal custody of her daughter and Masterson to be allowed visitation. Reports claim that the couple may need The Church of Scientology’s “permission” to file for divorce.
Bijou Phillips is the daughter of the 1960s folk rock band, The Mamas & the Papas lead singer, John Phillips. She is also the half-sister of singer Chynna Phillips of Wilson Phillips.
Phillips is a model, singer, and actress. She made her singing debut with the alternative rock album “I’d Rather Eat Glass” in 1999.
Her first starring role in a film was also in 1999 when she played in “Black and White.” She then got a big break starring with Kate Hudson in the smash movie, “Almost Famous” in 2000.
Then she played in” Bully” in 2001 and “The Door in the Floor” in 2004. She played in movies until 2013, when she chose to start a family with Masterson.
