British Royal News says that while there were certainly a lot of missteps that the royals made this year, no one expected Prince William and Kate Middleton to make a mistake like this. Their Caribbean tour back in March was perhaps one of the worst state trips that royal critics have seen in a very long time. Here’s why.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge flew by private jet to Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign, but they were ambushed with conversations about whether to remove the queen as head of state at the time.

Royal expert and author Catherine Mayer thinks that the British Royal Family is in need of a shakeup because of the tour. According to The Guardian, Mayer puts it this way, “Barbados didn’t bother to wait for a new sovereign, breaking with the crown last year. Six of the remaining Caribbean realms have already signaled a desire to follow suit.

Protesters at every stage pointed to the ways in which the royals are beneficiaries in economic and social terms of empire and inequality, enslavement and exploitation. None of the palace officials involved in planning either trip seemed to have grasped how this heritage twines with Windrush and other fresher narratives of injustice, whether of Black lives extinguished by the police supposed to protect them or of a woman of color crushed and cold-shouldered by the institution in whose service her in-laws traveled.”

Royal critic Camilla Tominey said, “The days of us accepting royals, walking around foreign climbs, not addressing the elephant in the room which is our imperialism and colonial past is over. William and Kate of course have to accept some of the dissent that they encounter when they go on these tours…

The truth of the matter is, because of the Queen’s performance on the throne and her solid support of Commonwealth Countries, she remains sacrosanct. Are there going to be more countries flirting with republicanism when we have King Charles III on the throne? Well, yes, maybe.”

Following several days of criticism, particularly in Jamaica and from Jamaicans, about the way in which the tour has been conducted, the Duke of Cambridge delivered a speech in the Bahamas. However, William did not express similar words in Jamaica, where the debate about becoming a republic – and ditching the Queen – is much more alive than it is in The Bahamas where he gave this speech.

In a statement issued by Kensington Palace, the duke said overseas tours were “an opportunity to reflect.”  “You learn so much. What is on the minds of Prime Ministers. The hopes and ambitions of school children. The day-to-day challenges faced by families and communities,” he explained.
