Helena Bonham Carter came to the defence of J.K. Rowling and Johnny Depp by firmly opposing cancel culture as a result.

Depp, for his part, came out on top in a defamation lawsuit in which his ex-wife Amber Heard claimed to be a victim of domestic violence. And as part of that process, the actor was awarded around $15 million.

Helena has worked with Depp on numerous movies such as Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland, which is why she does know him quite well. With that being said, she made her position on Heard very clear.

In her comments, she said: “You can’t ban people. I hate cancel culture…I think he’s [Depp] fine now. Totally fine. My view is that [Amber Heard] got on that [#MeToo] pendulum. That’s the problem with these things.”

In addition to supporting Depp, Carter, 57, has also thrown her support behind Rowling. The Harry Potter author has been frequently criticized as a TERF (trans exclusionary radical feminist), Bonham Carter does not believe the label is warranted.

This term is used to refer to radical feminists who defy the notion that trans women are women. And as part of that process, Rowling received so much backlash to the point where her home address was leaked on social media, thus putting her in danger. That is why Carter felt things had been taken way overboard.

Her following comments confirmed as much: “It’s horrendous, a load of bollocks. I think she has been hounded. It’s been taken to the extreme, the judgmental-ism of people. She’s allowed her opinion, particularly if she’s suffered abuse. Everybody carries their own history of trauma.”

Cancel culture has unfortunately made it difficult to speak out and that is not not going to change anytime soon. But by having support out there, it has made it easier for stars to stand by their positions.
