It was a monmental weekend in the world of golf for Bryson DeChambeau, as he finally ended his wait for a long-awaited major. It was a dominant display by the American, as he aggressively took on one of the world’s most difficult golf courses to win the US Open.
There was still tension in the closing stages, as Matthew Wolff was still in contention. However, the debutant couldn’t get any closer than six shots as DeChambeau took the victory at Winged Foot.
DeChambeau was excellent throughout the event, as he ended the US Open as the only player to break par. The other 60 players struggled with the conditions on the course. Rory McIlroy was among those that struggled throughout the competition, as his hopes of a first major in five years were effectively over after a difficult beginning to the final day.
Golf News: DeChambeau Fights Back On Final Day
There looked as though there could be a shock result heading into the final day as Wolff, who was a debutant, was ahead on the leaderboard. Wolff went into the final day with a two-stroke lead.
DeChambeau missed an excellent early chance to chip away at that lead, but his moment would come later in the day. He finally managed to get his nose ahead on the fifth green.
Both players missed chances on the eighth, but it wouldn’t matter in the end for DeChambeau, who managed to pull further away as the day went on.
The victory was a formality heading around the final holes, as DeChambeau’s decision 12 months ago to change his tactic and put on weight for an advantage has reaped the most illustrious of rewards.
Golf News: Remainder Of The Leaderboard
Louis Oosthuizen took third place in the US Open for 2020, as he finished +2. The third place finish was a significant one for the South African, as it meant that he was able to break into the world’s top 20. It wasn’t his best performance at this major though, as he finished second back in 2015.
Harris English and Xander Schauffele rounded off the top five on the leaderboard. Meanwhile, there were placed in the top ten for Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy. The attention in the golf world will now turn to The Masters, which takes place in November at Augusta.
