According to Goldie Hawn, a Hollywood actress, the entertainment industry and comedy are being negatively impacted by cancel culture.
Goldie Hawn Criticizes Cancel Culture-‘The Word Itself Scares Me More Than Anything’
She believes that this phenomenon has led to a lack of trust in various sectors, including Hollywood and the American education system. Hawn specifically mentioned that cancel culture is causing harm to the entertainment industry and comedy.
Hawn, despite not considering herself as a “movie star,” has established a strong presence in Hollywood over the years. Having been in the industry for a considerable amount of time, Hawn acknowledges the changes that have taken place but is not entirely convinced that they have all been positive.
She stated that Will Smith’s action of slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards was reflective of today’s culture in its entirety. Smith caused controversy when he hit Chris Rock in response to his joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss condition, alopecia.
It has become well-known that Smith’s actions were in retaliation to the comment made by Rock. While the actor did apologize in the aftermath, Rock has not taken it too well. This was seen during Rock’s recent Netflix show, Selective Outrage, when he began to mock Smith in response. And for Hawn, cancel culture is a problem.
In her comments, she said: “There’s a disruption now. Disruptions are good. But imbalance isn’t. I hope to get back to some level of sensibility and fairness. So ‘cancel culture.’ The word itself scares me more than anything.
“It’s rigid, concretized thinking, which is not good. It’s got double edges on it. And who has the right to cancel?” The response on social media was much the same. Large numbers of people made it clear that cancel culture had made things become increasingly politicized, as stars had to second-guess what they otherwise may have said.
Therefore, they resonated with what Hawn had to say. One person wrote: “She’s right,” while another person stated: “Always like Goldie.” So there you have it folks. What did you think about this?
