Draymond Green wants Black History Month to be history, and he argues for his position saying, “Why we gotta keep getting the shortest month to celebrate our history? At some point, can we get rid of it?” Green asked reporters Tuesday night at the Chase Center.

The star player for the Warriors claimed that current lawmakers are attempting to eradicate Black History from schools, and he said he won’t accept just one month of celebration as a consolation prize.

For your information, the ACLU reports that more than 30 state legislatures have recently proposed legislation to stifle the teaching of Black history, and that hundreds of books by Black writers about racial history have been removed from the shelves.

Green said, “I’m not going to be the fool to say, ‘Yeah, we can celebrate it for 28 days. So at some point, I’d like to get rid of it. We’re making all these changes in the world — can’t talk about these people. Can’t talk about those people. Can’t say this. Can’t say that.”

During his postgame press briefing, Green, who was sporting a blue shirt that read “Built By Black History,” claimed that his attire choice was deliberate in order to make his point. The 2017 Defensive Player of the Year and four-time NBA champion said he didn’t want his demand to end Black History Month to be interpreted as an effort to minimize Black people.

Green continued to explain his position saying, “At some point, it’s time to get rid of Black History Month. Not get rid of Black history, like they’re trying to do. But Black History Month? Nah, teach my history from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, and then do it again. And then again. And then again. And then again.”
