Gillian Anderson has revealed that she was unaffected by Alec Baldwin’s tweet. He was deemed to be mocking her accent, despite his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, having gone through similar criticisms.
Gillian Anderson Is Unfazed By Alec Baldwin’s Tweet About Her Accent
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gillian stated how it never played on her mind. In fact, she had come across these accusations before. She said: “I don’t have social media on my phone, so I wasn’t [aware of the questions]. A couple people texted to say that something was going on. I didn’t pay any attention to it because it’s just something that I live.
“I grew up between two countries, and so depending on who is in my ear is which direction my accent goes. So, I’m so used to it that it’s kind of old news for me.” It should come as no surprise given Gillian’s connections with the UK and the US. She has addressed this numerous times and spoken about how she barely notices it. Instead, she prefers to be able to master it.
In a previous interview with The Telegraph, she said: “Even on the phone, my accent will change. Part of me wishes I could control it, but I can’t. I just slip into one or the other. When I moved to the States, I tried hard to cling on to my British accent because it made me different.”
Alec, for his part, really did not help himself when he commented on how Gillian’s accent was a mixture of two. Having noticed it, he tweeted: “Switching accents? That sounds fascinating.” Fans on Twitter became outraged at what they perceived to be a case of hypocrisy. The backlash forced the actor to deactivate his Twitter, after which he addressed the issue on Instagram.
He said: “[The comment was] not meant to be offensive. The person I was referring to is someone I am a huge fan of …, and that comment was meant to just illustrate the point that multicultural expressions of anyone … that’s your business.”
Given that Alec’s wife, Hilaria, had suffered a lot with her own accent, it is best that Alec keeps away from this topic.
