The circumstances surrounding the deaths of Hollywood icon Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, have prompted his daughters to take action, hiring a private investigator to delve deeper into what they suspect is a “cover-up,” RadarOnline.com has revealed.
Elizabeth and Leslie Hackman’s decision to bring in a private investigator stems from their growing frustration with the perceived lack of clarity surrounding their father’s death. This frustration has been exacerbated by a chilling new theory suggesting that a stalker might have played a role in the deaths of the 95-year-old actor and his 65-year-old wife.

Newly released body camera footage from sheriff’s deputies involved in the investigation has added another layer of intrigue. The footage shows Arakawa’s hairstylist, Christopher, recounting how she appeared “frazzled” and concerned about a mysterious man who was seemingly following her.
According to Christopher’s account, Arakawa had expressed fear following two separate incidents that occurred in December, just two months before she and Hackman were found dead at their $3.3 million Santa Fe compound.
Christopher told authorities that Gene and Betsy were worried about being followed in town. He described an encounter where a man with a folder full of photos of Hackman approached him, asking for an autograph. Arakawa found the situation unsettling and told the man he needed to “have more respect.”
The same man later returned, following the couple to another location and attempting to offer them a bottle of wine, which they declined.
While officials have attributed Arakawa’s death to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare rodent-borne disease, and suggested that Hackman, who suffered from dementia and high blood pressure, likely died due to his condition and the emotional distress following his wife’s death, Hackman’s daughters remain unconvinced.
Sources close to the family have indicated that Elizabeth and Leslie Hackman are frustrated by the lack of updates on Gene’s toxicology and cellphone records, which remain sealed. They suspect that crucial information is being withheld.
“They have lost faith in the authorities,” an insider told Hollywood insider Rob Shuter. “This doesn’t add up. It feels like someone is trying to cover something up – and Gene’s daughters will not rest until the truth is revealed.”
