Netflix is back at it again! Sergio is one of their films coming soon this year. It is a biographical drama about the life of top UN diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello. Perhaps the things that viewers notice about it first is actors Wagner Moura and Ana de Armas. Moura is the beloved actor who plays Pablo Escobar in Narcos. Armas is a rising star, most recently seen for her performance in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out.
Sergio, however, looks to tell a deep story that many may not even have heard about. According to a summary on IMDB, it is “A sweeping drama set in the chaotic aftermath of the US invasion of Iraq, where the life of top UN diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello hangs in the balance during the most treacherous mission of his career.”

This film will tell the story about his life, and most importantly, the last mission he took. He takes one last assignment. Although, it takes him to the heart of the conflict in the Mid East. Baghdad. It is meant to be a quick and brief final mission, however, everything changes in a second. The walls of the UN Headquarters come crashing down, caused by a bomb blast. Now, trapped under the debris he is thrust into the life or death struggle. Sergio Vieira de Mello was a beloved man for his work to bring peace. He was even considered a likely candidate for UN Secretary-General. Sergio most notably helped East Timor become an independent state. He was very effective in most of his work and was given many awards for his work. Now, it will be interesting to see how Netflix will portray this man, and his accomplishments.
If you don’t know the story of his life, I highly recommend you read about it before the film. There are numerous sites that offer his story, and depending on the film, it may give you a more accurate portrayal. Of course, there’s always a chance that they will stay accurate in the film. Sergio is set to come out on Netflix, April 17. It is only a few short months away, but this is one you should add to your watchlist. Hopefully, Netflix’s film will accurately recount the story of Sergio’s life. I guess only time will tell.
