It’s hard to believe it has been five years since the world lost Bill Paxton. It’s harder to believe that his family has been duking it out in court, claiming wrongful death and negligence, for almost as long.
Finally this week the Paxton family is seeing results with the Titanic actor’s widow and children set to receive $1 million as a partial settlement with an anesthesiologist medical group.
The defendants- General Anesthesia Specialists Partnership was involved in the ‘Twister’ star’s heart surgeries in February 2017 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Only eleven days later the 61-year-old passed away.
Family Of Late Actor, Bill Paxton Awarded $1 Million In Wrongful Death Suit Settlement
The Paxton family is claiming negligence on behalf of medical professionals caused the death. The anesthesia group denies responsibility and Los Angeles Superior Court docs filed on behalf of the medical group state that its “personnel complied with the standard of care insofar as their involvement in the care and treatment of [Paxton], and nothing their personnel did or didn’t do caused or contributed to his death.”
Despite not accepting culpability, attorneys for the anesthesiologists are looking to gain approval from the courts to settle on the sum of $1 million, calling the settlement a “business decision.”
The world was shocked on February 25, 5years ago when the Paxton family released a statement announcing the beloved actor’s death.
“It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery,” the statement read as well as eulogizing his “illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker.”
“Bill’s passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable.”
The Hollywood “nice guy” was open about his heart health issue; a damaged aortic valve, caused by the rheumatic fever he contracted in his childhood.
On Valentine’s Day of 2017, Paxton underwent open-heart surgery to repair the valve as well as to correct an aortic aneurysm. The very next day the star underwent a second surgery to repair a coronary artery.
Unfortunately, he never ‘came right’ after the surgeries and his condition deteriorated over the next ten days. On February 25 he suffered a fatal stroke.
The settlement with the anesthesia group is only one part of the wrongful death suit. The Paxton family- wife of 30 years Louise Newbury and his two adult children, James Paxton and Lydia Paxton will appear in court again in September 2022 to face the performing surgeon and other plaintiffs from Cedars-Sinai.
They are claiming the surgeon used a “high risk and unconventional surgical approach” which the doctor lacked the experience to perform.
