(This article includes spoilers from the day-ahead Y&R episode that airs in Canada on June 1st and in the USA on June 2nd.)
Tuesday’s episode of The Young and the Restless completely shifted the Matt Clark storyline after the memories restored inside Noah’s recreated Shadow Room continued flooding back in devastating waves.
But instead of reverting into the cold and dangerous man the Newmans feared would return, Matt completely unraveled emotionally.
By the end of the episode, Matt was sobbing over the horrific things he had done to Sharon, Noah, Sienna and Nick while begging Victor Newman for one chance to prove he was not beyond saving.
Matt Was Horrified By the Person He Used To Be

Picking up after the memory recovery inside the Shadow Room, Matt became increasingly overwhelmed as flashes of his past crimes continued hitting him one after another.
He remembered terrorizing Sharon and Noah, forcing Noah into drugs, attacking Sienna and manipulating nearly everyone around him. The memories left him physically shaken.
“I am so sorry,” Matt cried while pacing the room in distress.
What shocked everyone was that Matt did not become aggressive after remembering everything. Instead, he seemed horrified by himself. Sienna attempted to calm him down, but Matt warned her to stay away because he still viewed himself as dangerous.

The most disturbing part for Matt was not only remembering what he had done — it was remembering how much he enjoyed it at the time.
“I really liked hurting people,” he admitted.

Matt became more frantic as the memories continued surfacing. At one point, he rubbed his hands together repeatedly like he was trying to wash the darkness off himself.
“I don’t wanna die… not like this,” he said through tears. “I want a chance to make it right.”
Sharon, Noah and Sienna Did Not Recognize This Version of Matt

Sharon seemed deeply unsettled by what she was witnessing because this was not the reaction anyone expected after Matt regained his memories.

Noah admitted he fully expected the old Matt to instantly return. Instead, the man standing in front of them looked emotionally destroyed by the realization of what he had done.
Sienna captured the moment perfectly when she quietly observed,
“The monster has turned into a man.”

For months, Matt has been portrayed as one of the show’s most dangerous villains. But after remembering everything, he suddenly looked less like a threat and more like someone consumed by guilt and self-hatred.
Still, Sharon made it clear that remorse does not erase the damage Matt caused. And Noah openly questioned whether this emotional collapse would last or if the darkness could eventually return again.
Nick Could Barely Process What Happened

Nick looked almost as shaken as Matt by the entire situation.
After removing Matt from the Shadow Room, Nick later explained everything to Victor at the Newman Ranch. He admitted that getting Matt’s memories back appeared to have completely “fried his brain.”
Nick pointed out that while Matt now remembered everything, he still had not turned violent or manipulative again.
That clearly caught Victor’s attention.

Even Victor acknowledged the complicated reality surrounding Matt after what happened with Nick’s overdose. No matter how much damage Matt caused in the past, he also saved Nick’s life.
Victor ultimately decided not to immediately hand Matt over to authorities. Instead, he told Nick they needed to observe him and see what regaining those memories would actually trigger moving forward.
Matt Told Victor He Does Not Believe He Has a Soul

Later in the episode, Victor confronted Matt alone in the Newman gym.
Matt was still emotionally spiraling from the memories that had returned. He openly admitted Victor had every reason to hate him.
“My memory is back and it’s all true,” Matt confessed. “I’m a vicious human being.”

What made the scenes especially powerful was that Matt genuinely seemed unable to understand how he ever became that person in the first place. He remembered committing those crimes. He even remembered his conscience warning him not to do those things — but he did them anyway.
“I thought I was just a normal guy with a soul,” Matt admitted. “A man with a soul wouldn’t do those things.”

Victor asked Matt whether he believed he deserved punishment for his crimes, and Matt did not hesitate.
He admitted the world might genuinely be better off without him in it. He even said he would “do himself in” before ever allowing himself to become that version of himself again.

Still, Matt desperately begged Victor for one chance to prove he could change.
“Tell me what to do, and I’ll do it,” he pleaded.
And for the first time since this storyline began, Victor did not immediately dismiss the possibility.
Nick and Phyllis Took Another Turn for the Worse
While Matt’s emotional breakdown dominated the episode, Nick’s confrontation with Phyllis created another major shift.
After Phyllis checked on him at the GCAC, Nick thanked her for helping save his life and for ultimately turning Matt over. But the conversation quickly changed once Phyllis asked whether she would still get to keep Newman Enterprises.
Nick immediately shut the idea down.
He reminded her that she knowingly harbored a fugitive and warned that she could still face legal consequences for helping Matt.
Phyllis was blindsided, especially after believing Nick had promised to protect her if she cooperated.

The tension escalated even further when Nick coldly informed her that she would not be keeping the company after all.
“Why are you talking like this? Who are you?” Phyllis asked him.
That final moment felt important because Phyllis clearly no longer recognized the version of Nick standing in front of her. Between the addiction crisis, Matt’s return and everything that happened over the past few weeks, Nick seems emotionally exhausted and far more hardened than usual.
And with Matt now begging for redemption while Phyllis faces losing everything, the fallout from this storyline may only be getting started.
