Grimes, the musician and former partner of Elon Musk, has shared a significant update about her health, revealing diagnoses of autism, ADHD, and a likely case of dyslexia. The 37-year-old artist made the disclosure while criticizing an account on X (formerly Twitter) called “ADHD Memes.”
The exchange began when the “ADHD Memes” account posted a screenshot of an X post that stated: “I saw a TikTok about how excessive reading in childhood is a sign of dissociation and I can’t stop thinking about it.”
Elon Musk’s Ex Grimes Reveals Autism, ADHD and Dyslexia Diagnoses, BLASTS “Infohazard” Mental Health Accounts
Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, responded to the post, expressing her concerns about certain online “mental health” accounts. “I have to say, there’s this subculture of, I guess ‘mental health’ accounts that I actually think are like extreme infohazards,” she wrote.
She then revealed her own diagnoses: “Got diagnosed w ADHD/autism this year and realized I’m prob dyslexic, which is why I can’t spell without spellcheck.”
Grimes elaborated on how these diagnoses might have impacted her earlier life. She suggested that if she had known about her ADHD and autism as a child, she “would have worked so much less hard” and likely would have been prescribed medication. She also noted that her “weird obsessions and motivations” might have been considered “pathological” in her younger years.
Grimes also weighed in on the potential link between ADHD and screen time. While discussing the importance of reading, she stated that she believes a “huge percentage” of ADHD diagnoses are related to “screen addiction and dopaminergic burn out.” She added that her ADHD symptoms “were infinitely worse” when she “wasn’t an avid reader.”
The singer went on to criticize what she called the “uniformed social media mental health subculture,” describing some accounts as “anti-civilizational and geared towards making people worse.” She emphasized the potential dangers of “unsupervised medical advice and proliferation of info about symptoms” on social media.
Grimes’s disclosure comes amid her ongoing legal dispute with Elon Musk concerning the care of their children. She has been vocal about her efforts to protect their children from public exposure, particularly after their four-year-old son was photographed at the White House with Musk.
