President Donald Trump’s latest round of retaliatory tariffs against America’s top three trading partners has been met with scathing criticism from The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board, which labeled the move the start of the ‘dumbest trade war in history.’

The Journal, known for its conservative leanings and deep coverage of economic issues, criticized Trump’s tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China, stating they ‘make no sense.’ Trump announced that a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports, along with a 10% levy on Chinese goods, would take effect on Tuesday. These three nations accounted for roughly 40% of U.S. imports last year.

Dumbest Trade War In History: Wall Street Journal TRASHES Donald Trump Over Canada/Mexico Tariffs

Two days after the blistering editorial, Trump fired back, calling the Journal ‘always wrong’ and part of the ‘Tariff Lobby.’ In a Truth Social post, he claimed the newspaper was defending countries that have, in his words, engaged in a ‘decades-long ripoff of America’ in trade, crime, and drug trafficking.

Trump’s justification for the tariffs includes a push to curb the flow of fentanyl and other opioids into the U.S., as well as pressuring Mexico and Canada on immigration policies. However, The Wall Street Journal zeroed in on the economic consequences, particularly the decision to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada—both longstanding allies and critical trade partners.

‘Leaving China aside, Mr. Trump’s justification for this economic assault on our neighbors makes no sense,’ the Journal wrote, noting that drugs have flowed into the U.S. for decades and that neither country can fully stop the problem.

    Economic Fallout and Backlash

The Journal also criticized Trump’s dismissive stance toward Canadian and Mexican exports, particularly essential goods like oil, lumber, and automobiles. Last month, Trump declared, ‘We don’t need their cars. We don’t need their lumber. We don’t need their food products because we make the same products right on the other side of the border. It’s sort of crazy.’

In response, the Journal wrote: ‘Mr. Trump sometimes sounds as if the U.S. shouldn’t import anything at all, that America can be a perfectly closed economy making everything at home. This is called autarky, and it isn’t the world we live in—or one we should want to live in, as Mr. Trump may soon find out.’

The piece highlighted the reliance of the U.S. auto industry on Canada and Mexico, noting that last year, Canada supplied 13% of U.S. auto parts imports, while Mexico accounted for nearly 42%. The editorial warned that without this trade, American automakers would become ‘much less competitive,’ jeopardizing thousands of well-paying jobs across states like Texas, Ohio, Illinois, and Michigan.

    Retaliation from Trading Partners

The backlash from U.S. trading partners has been swift. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a retaliatory tax on $107 billion worth of U.S. goods, including beer, wine, and bourbon. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also pledged countermeasures, though specific products have not yet been disclosed. Meanwhile, China issued a statement urging the U.S. to ‘correct its mistakes’ and work toward mutual cooperation.

The Journal noted that Trump should already be aware of the likely repercussions, given that his previous tariffs on steel and aluminum during his first term prompted Mexico to impose tariffs on U.S. steel, pork, fresh cheese, and bourbon.

A Blow to U.S. Trade Credibility

The editorial board warned that Trump’s latest tariffs undermine the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), a trade deal he once championed, and could erode America’s ability to negotiate future trade agreements. ‘The U.S. willingness to ignore its treaty obligations, even with friends, won’t make other countries eager to do deals,’ the Journal wrote.

While Trump may claim victory if he extracts minor concessions, the Journal concluded that if a North American trade war persists, it would be remembered as ‘one of the dumbest in history.’

Ongoing Tensions with The Wall Street Journal

Since taking office, Trump has had a contentious relationship with The Wall Street Journal, which has frequently criticized his policies. The paper has previously denounced his pardons of January 6 rioters, his attempts to end birthright citizenship, and his decision to revoke security details for former officials threatened by Iran.

More recently, the Journal ridiculed Trump’s launch of a cryptocurrency meme coin, calling it a ‘caper’ that displayed ‘remarkably poor judgment.’

Despite these critiques, the newspaper initially expressed cautious optimism on Inauguration Day, writing that Trump’s speech delivered a ‘message of aspiration and optimism that most Americans will welcome.’ However, as his administration has unfolded, the Journal has become one of his most prominent conservative critics.

With the tariff battle escalating, it remains to be seen whether Trump will adjust course or double down. Either way, the Journal has made its position clear: this trade war is a grave mistake.
