Dr Velma McClymont, a British-Jamaican writer and poet, is encouraging people from the Commonwealth Caribbean to stand up for the biracial Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, in the face of the racist comments and abuse being thrown at her by some British media outlets.
Dr Velma McClymont Urges The Commonwealth Caribbean To Defend Meghan Markle Against Racist Abuse
McClymont expressed that the Caribbean community living in Britain have been heavily ‘traumatised’ by the recent statements made in the British media about Markle, but sadly are unable to do anything about it and are thus in need of help from the Caribbean people in their region to speak up. Velma alleged that the British tabloid press has been quite unkind to Meghan, mainly because of her racial heritage.
Once the public became aware of her connection to the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, from the start of their courtship to their wedding and during their time in the Royal Family, she states that sections of the British media have constantly been mocking her with many offensive and racially charged articles.
After all, Meghan was the first person of mixed-race in the modern British Royal Family. Jeremy Clarkson, a British broadcaster and columnist, recently unleashed a fierce attack on Markle.
He expressed an intense dislike of her, and Clarkson then went on to describe his fantasy of Meghan being marched through the streets of Britain naked, while the crowd screamed “Shame!” and hurled excrement at her. While Clarkson did apologise, with the article going on to be removed, it still left a bitter taste in the mouth. With that being said, Velma did not hold back.
In her comments, she said: “If influential persons in the Caribbean remain silent in the face of this blatant form of hate crime, and continue to welcome the royals and their allies [such as Clarkson and Morgan] to the site of Britain’s crime against Africa, then you in the region are telling us that our lives… are not worth defending.”
