Dr. Shola Mos-Shogbamimu has stated that those who criticize Meghan Markle are not acknowledging the role of misogyny and racism in driving their attacks against her.

According to her, the criticism directed at the Duchess of Sussex has revealed a lack of understanding about how different forms of oppression, such as racism and misogyny, can intersect and manifest beyond just the use of certain words.

The activist encouraged individuals to recognize the harm caused by the overlapping discrimination based on race, gender, and socioeconomic status. In her comments, she said: “One of the key things that have come out of the Meghan Markle saga that has gone worldwide is there is a real, in-depth, deep level of ignorance about intersectionality.”

During a panel discussion on the topic of the reality of being a woman in 2023, Shogbamimu shared her thoughts. Her comments came after she spoke publicly about receiving a threatening letter from an individual claiming to be linked to a Neo-Nazi extremist organization. The incident was reported by The Independent. With that being said, her position was very clear.

Her following comments confirmed as much: “I don’t need to be Meghan Markle to recognise the misogyny and the sexist attacks against her as a woman because as a woman I’ve experienced the same.” The response on social media, however, differed.

This was on the basis that a certain subset felt Meghan had shown herself to not be credible. Therefore, there was a lack of sympathy being expressed to her, despite recognition that she had been untreated unfairly to some extent.

One person wrote: “I think she’s simply disingenuous, much like most of the royal family,” while another person stated: “This does not excuse bad behaviour and nor should it prevent people calling that behaviour out.”
