There’s speculation that Adele might have single-handedly canceled herself – or even killed her career – by postponing her Las Vegas shows. Many of her fans have traveled thousands of miles and spent thousands of dollars to see the British songstress, prompting her to apologize for the delay in a tearful message and just 24 hours before her opening night. Here’s what you need to know.
Adele had announced her delay in an Instagram video on Thursday. She said, “We’ve been absolutely destroyed by delivery delays and Covid.” She said half of her team was “down with Covid.”
Did Adele Just Single-Handedly Kill Her Career By Postponing Her Las Vegas Shows? Fans Seem To Think So
“I’m so sorry, but my show ain’t ready,” the star added. “Half my team have Covid and it’s been impossible to finish the show,” she said, adding that “delivery delays” had also played havoc with her plans.
Of course, it didn’t take long at all for both her fans and critics to weigh in on the situation. Many of them said, “Something doesn’t sit right with me from her explanation. If you accept an obscene amount of money to do a show you simply do not say the day of, ‘I’m sorry, it’s not ready!’ How is that her takeaway instead of the fact that 1/2 her crew is allegedly sick with Covid?” along with, “Thoughtless and unprofessional. What professional waits until the last minute to postpone a show? Fans already arrived for the show or otherwise booked & paid for travel; they’ll have to eat the cost. Not good. I think this has more to do with performance anxiety than logistics.”
Another critic wrote, “Nope. Just no. Something in the water ain’t clean here. No extreme theatrics are needed for Adele’s genre. Adele could enter down a stately curved staircase, perform in a stunning black dress with a few minor special effects, a variety of silky backdrops/sparkly curtains, and the critics and fans would still love her.”
That said, Adele did manage to surprise some fans in Las Vegas with a video call after she postponed her shows. Friday was supposed to be the first of Adele’s series of concerts at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace that were scheduled to run through April 16. As a consolation prize of sorts, ticket holders were given gift bags with a T-shirt, magnets representing her albums, a keychain and other goodies.
