There’s dirty laundry, and then there’s really dirty celebrity laundry. During his court hearing for his $50 defamation trial, Johnny Depp said that he sometimes had to lock himself in a bathroom to escape his ex-wife Amber Heard’s violence. Here’s what you need to know.
Depp, 58, filed the suit after Heard, 35, wrote a column for the Washington Post in December 2018 in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” She had a “need for conflict, a need for violence” that “erupts out of nowhere,” Depp told jurors in Fairfax County Circuit Court during his second day of testimony.

“And the only thing I learned to do with it is exactly what I did as a child: retreat,” he said.
Depp said Heard made little digs at him to demean him, with the insults escalating into full-fledged circular arguments from which there was “no way in or out.”
“It was sort of a rapid fire, sort of endless parade of insults,” he said. “Ms Heard was unable to be wrong. It just didn’t happen. She couldn’t be wrong.”
Meanwhile, Heard has accused Mr Depp of physically and sexually assaulting her on multiple occasions – something he has not yet addressed in detail, beyond dismissing the allegations.
Johnny Depp has filed a $50 million defamation suit back in 2019 over a Washington Post op-ed about domestic violence which was penned by Heard in late 2018, the bitter and dispute between the couple is presently set to go to trial starting April 11. This was after his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, went public with allegations of domestic violence against him. A judge at the High Court last year found the allegations to be “substantially correct.”
