Demi Lovato Reveals How Her Family Reacted To Her Decision To Identify As Non-Binary

The musician has had to deal with a whole host of questions, with regards to her sexuality, but before she came out so publicly, it seems she let her loved ones know first to prevent them from suffering any shock.

During an interview on the YouTube Pride 2021, Demi said: “I actually had come out to loved ones and friends, like, last year, but this year. I felt it was really important for me to share that with the world…holding it in any longer just didn’t feel right.”

Her decision to come out was not supported by everyone, though. Demi has a fanbase that stretches far and wide. This includes members who are very conservative in nature, and therefore, opposed to the idea of LGBTQ rights.

Having said all that, the vast majority have been there to support her. And that has been none more so than her family. She added: “Most people have been so wonderful, and that’s the reality of coming out. I am grateful for the progress that my family members have made in using my pronouns, team members, friends.”

Demi follows the long list of stars who have decided to come out in 2021. By doing so, she is hoping to shift the conversation away from negative perception to one on how people can facilitate those looking to validate their sexuality.

The use of pronouns has often been divisive, but Demi hopes that with more education and dialogue, it can become a part of the regular discourse. She continued: “I love the conversation that it has begun to spark, and I think that’s really important. So I have officially changed my pronouns to they/them, and yeah, I feel better than ever.”

With Pride month reaching the end of its conclusion, Demi is hoping that her own story can inspire others to confront their own identity issues. Demi has been through a lot in her life, but given how she has responded to such adversity, there is no doubt that she will become much stronger as a result.
