Demi’s substance abuse issues have been well documented, which did result in a near-fatal overdose as the star was admitted into hospital in 2018. While she has managed to come a long way since then, the traces of her problems started when she was just 12-years-old. This began in response to her taking some opiates.

The former drug is often compared to morphine, but Demi’s dependency on it started to grow. In an interview on  “Call Her Daddy” podcast, she said: “I started experimenting for the first time when I was 12, or 13.

“I got into a car accident and they prescribed me opiates. My mom didn’t think she would have to lock up the opiates from her 13-year-old daughter but I was already drinking at that point.”

Once Demi’s mother realised that her daughter had an addiction, she responded by taking the opiates from her. Although the intention was sincere, the fact of the matter is that this did not resolve the situation.

Demi had a bigger problem with her drinking, which was only exacerbated now that the drugs were not there. She added: “[I]  drank a lot. [That] should have been a major red flag.”

The failure to tackle that problem head-on led to things spiralling out of control. So much so that Demi resorted to hardcore drugs, as the addiction only became worse. All of this had the impact of her entering into rehab, but not before some major damage was done.

Her following comments confirmed as much: “At 17, it was the first time I tried coke and, like, loved it too much and then kinda bled into me going to treatment right after I turned 18.”

Demi made a brave decision to speak out about her demons, and this will inspire others to overcome their issues. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
