Demi Lovato has opened up on the horrific consequences that her drug addiction had on her wider family.
Demi Lovato: ‘I Was Addicted To Crack And Heroin’
In her new documentary entitled, Dancing With the Devil, Demi revealed how her close friends were unaware of the scale of her problems. She said: “None of my friends know what I was using. I kept it hidden from everyone. That was one thing I was very good at — hiding the fact that I was addicted to crack and heroin.”
And it seems Demi’s issues stemmed from a tough childhood. Her father also had abused substances, which left her very detached from her family. She has spoken in the past on how that has plagued her personal relationships with other men, which would explain why she has failed to find her special someone. But for all her troubles, she longs for some family, and yet, her father’s passing has put an end to that.
She added: “I longed for that relationship with him [her father], and then I resented him because he was an addict and an alcoholic and was abusive to my mom. It was that lack of stability that culminated in the most challenging period of Demi’s life: the realization that she was an addict. In 2018, she was taken into hospital following a drug overdose. It was not the drugs that have continued to haunt Demi, though.
She admitted that she might have been a victim of sexual assault, given that she was unable to understand the circumstances surrounding the condition in which the medics found her. She continued: “When they found me, I was naked. I was blue. I was literally left for dead after he took advantage of me, and when I woke up in the hospital, they asked if I had consensual sex. There was one flash that I had of him on top of me. I saw that flash, and I said yes. It actually wasn’t until maybe a month after my overdose that I realized, ‘Hey, you weren’t in any state of mind to make a consensual decision.”
It was clearly a difficult time for Demi, but her fans will be there every step of the way to ensure she gets back to her old self.
