David Hyde Pierce has firmly stated that he has no intentions of reprising his iconic role as Dr. Niles Crane in the  Frasier revival. Despite the praise and four Emmy Awards he garnered for his portrayal on the original NBC sitcom, the 64-year-old actor expressed during an interview with the Los Angeles Times that he has “never really wanted to go back.”

When speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Pierce said, “It’s not like I said, ‘Oh, I don’t ever want to do that again.’ I loved every moment. It was that I wanted to do other things.”

Paramount+ brings back the iconic Frasier series almost three decades after its 1993 debut, featuring the return of Kelsey Grammer as the beloved and sophisticated psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane.

The reboot explores Frasier’s move from Seattle to Boston, where he aims to be closer to his grown-up son Frederick, also known as Freddy, portrayed by Jack Cutmore-Scott.

However, the revival is marked by the absence of several original cast members, with John Mahoney notably missing. Mahoney, who played Frasier’s father Martin, passed away at the age of 77 in 2018.

Pierce also had other things on his plate when time for the revival came around, including another television show, “And when we got into real talks about the reboot, I had just started on the Julia TV show and was working on a musical and going to do another musical, not this one. And I just thought, ‘I don’t want to be committed to a show and not be able to do stuff like this.'”

He also went on to say that, “And I also thought, ‘They don’t actually need me.’ Frasier has moved on to a new world. They have new characters. And I think I’m right. It’s doing great. And the new people they have are great.”

While it does feel like something’s missing without Piece on the series, we can see where he’s coming from and wish him the best.
