David Beckham Slammed After Defending His Role As An Ambassador For The Qatar World Cup

David Beckham addressed his involvement with Qatar, the host nation for the World Cup, for the first time.

After being heavily criticised, Beckham, 47, was accused of taking millions of pounds from Qatar to promote the tournament, via his role as an ambassador, despite their view on LGBTQ+ rights and their poor track record with human rights violations as well as mistreating migrant workers.

And yet, it appears that Beckham is keen on highlighting how sport can unite people. In an official statement on behalf of Beckham, a representative said the following: “We understand that there are different and strongly held views about engagement in the Middle East but see it as positive that debate about the key issues has been stimulated directly by the first World Cup being held in the region.

“We hope that these conversations will lead to greater understanding and empathy.” The ex-England captain has been promoting Qatar through a commercial for ‘Visit Qatar.’

His endorsements have been met with harsh condemnation, particularly from LGBTQ+ individuals, who claim that Beckham’s backing of Qatar is contradictory to his reputation as someone who backs gay rights.

Not only that, but according to The Times, the former footballer had put some conditions on his showings in Qatar, like not notifying the media beforehand, and it seemed like he was protected from any inquiries. While that may have been the case, his publicist denied doing anything of the sort.

The fans on social media slammed Beckham for failing to address the issues that had been raised up by Qatar hosting the World Cup. And people made it clear in no uncertain terms that his principles had been compromised for the sake of money.

One person wrote: “How much is enough money for this man? The greed has no ceiling.” It is fair to say that Beckham’s words have not gone down very well at all.
