Christina Ricci recalled how she had a conversation with Johnny Depp over what being gay was all about when she was just nine-years-old.

This had allegedly happened when Christina was working alongside Winona Ryder, who just so happened to be Depp’s girlfriend at the time, on the set of ‘Mermaids.’ And given that Christina was unaware of what it was to be gay, Depp took his time out to make sure that the young actress knew exactly what to expect.
In her comments, Christina said: “Johnny [Depp] is actually the person who explained to me what homosexuality was when I was 9…I was like, ‘Well, I don’t understand what that is.’
“And, and I was in Winona’s [Ryder] trailer, and she was like, ‘I don’t know how … ‘ So, she put me on the phone with Johnny. And Johnny explained it to me.”
This was clearly a sensitive issue and one that had to be approached with caution, given the fact that Christina was at such a young age. But Depp managed to put the point across in a way that did not overwhelm Christina.
This particularly important given that there had been an incident on set, which suggested that there may have been accusations of homophobia. That is why it was critical for Christina to know what was going on.
Her following comments confirmed as much: “There was something going on on-set…And they were like, ‘Oh, well he might be homophobic…He was like, ‘It’s when a man wants to have sex with a man and when a woman wants to have sex with a woman,’ and I was like, ‘Ah, OK.”
And by managing to navigate this tricky issue, it once again showed just how well Depp was able to articulate himself. And that was most recently seen when the actor was praised for the way that he came across in his defamation case against Amber Heard.
