Grammy-winning rock band, Cage The Elephant is in some hot water today after their lead singer, Matthew Shultz was arrested in Manhattan. The police found two loaded guns in his room at the Bowery Hotel. The hotel is located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. As of right now, the 39-year-old singer has been charged with felony criminal possession of a firearm.
What Happened?
One employee at the hotel saw Shultz carrying a handgun with him into a public restroom and they contacted the police. After the police knocked on his hotel room door several times, Shultz answered the door and was asked to step into the hallway. That is when he admitted to the police that he was in possession of two handguns.
Matthew Shultz, Cage The Elephant Front Man, ARRESTED for Possession of Two Loaded Guns In Hotel Room
The police went so far as to ask him if there were any other weapons in his hotel room that he hadn’t told them about. He said that he didn’t know. That is when he was arrested and taken to the 9th precinct station. Shultz was actually in police custody for two days, but he ended up having to be rushed to the hospital. He needed some of his daily medications and began to suffer from the side effects of not having them on him.
Of course, the police couldn’t just waltz right into his hotel room, they had to get a search warrant and the judge was quick to grant them one. During the search, they found two loaded guns, a Smith & Wesson and a Sig Sauer. Even though the hotel staff and police were very worried about the possession of these weapons, it turns out that Shultz does have a license to carry them.
Shultz is originally from Nashville, Tennessee and he had no criminal record whatsoever. He has been the frontman of the band for decades and even his fans and bandmates find him to be caring and kind. They are not afraid that he would hurt anyone or use the guns with ill intent.
Cage The Elephant was nominated in 2011 for the MTV Music Video Awards and then in 2014 for Best Alternative Music Album. They won two Grammys, one in 2016 and one in 2019. As of right now, the band and Matthew haven’t given a statement on the arrest. We will have to wait and see if they do and will continue to keep an eye on this story to see if he fights these charges.
