Brooke Shields has acknowledged that she is surprised that she managed to endure being objectified at the young age of 11.
Brooke Shields Recalls Being Sexualized As A Child-‘That Always Just Seared Me’
The 57-year-old actress got emotional in the trailer of her two-part documentary “Pretty Baby,” where she talks about her career spanning decades.
She recalled being thrust into the world of adult sexuality, which left a profound impact on her. In the documentary named after her early movie role as a child prostitute, she reflected on feeling like she was only valued for her appearance.
She recalls a time when she was referred to as an “exquisite-looking young lady” and a “pretty girl” by a male journalist when she was still very young.
And that is something that did not sit well with her. In her comments, she said: “That always just seared me.
“The most photographed woman in the world. Iconic American beauty, object of desire, “sexualized child model, “vulnerable” and “exploitation.”
During the documentary, the female performer disclosed that she had been sexually assaulted not long after finishing college in 1987.
She temporarily stepped away from her Hollywood career to study at Princeton University in the 1980s, and she has two daughters named Rowan and Grier with her spouse Chris Henchy.
After she came back to the entertainment field, she had a meal with a male individual to talk about prospective acting assignments.
Subsequently, he purportedly persuaded her to accompany him to his lodging. For a considerable period, the performer didn’t come to terms with the attack and even held herself responsible for it.
She added: “I go up to the hotel room, and he disappears for a while. I didn’t fight that much. I didn’t.
“I just absolutely froze. I thought one ‘No’ should’ve been enough, and I just thought, ‘Stay alive and get out,’ and I just shut it out.”
The response on social media was far from sympathetic. This was on the basis that some felt her close family members should have looked out for her.
And the failure to do that meant they had made the problem worse. One person wrote: “Maybe your mom bears some responsibility ?
“Maybe,” while another person stated: “Hollyweird is full of people who exploit children, I don’t know why you weirdos want her to shut up about it.”
