British Royals News finds that Prince William is compelled to fulfil to royal duties, but that doesn’t stop him from enjoying the finer things in life, such as soccer. The prince is an avid Aston Villa supporter, but this week he was tasked with stepping into the lion’s den and visiting their cross-city rivals West Bromwich Albion, and he was handed a gift that left him red-faced. The Duke of Cambridge was on duties as President of the FA at the Championship club, but the club’s CEO Mark Jenkins had a rather cheeky surprise for the future King.
Royal News: Surprise Gift For Royalty
Jenkins was the first to greet the prince, but on his departure, he told the Duke that he had a gift for his two children- two West Bromwich Albion shirts. It was a cunning plan by the CEO as he decided against giving one to the prince for Prince George, as it was already clear that there was no swaying his allegiance to Aston Villa. Prince George is clearly already a Villa fan through and through after sending social media into a frenzy earlier in the season when he was pictured celebrating one of the goals for the Villa in their Premier League win against Norwich City. As he handed over the gift, Mr Jenkins joked: “I don’t think we’ve got a chance with your eldest.”
Royal News: Why William Visited West Bromwich Albion
The prince was at the club to discuss his new mental health campaign, which he aims to bring into the top four leagues in England. William was in good form throughout the day, and that was evident from the first couple of words that he spoke to the players’ and their club manager, Slaven Bilic. He said: “I’m sorry I’m here as an Aston Villa fan, but I’m hoping we can move on from that.”
Royal News: The Kensington Royal Instagram account discussed the other reasons behind his trip.
The account posted: “Today The Duke of Cambridge met the @WBA squad to talk about some of the pressures they face as players and the impact these challenges can often have upon their mental wellbeing.
“Alongside Head Coach Slaven Bilić, they discussed the #HeadsUp campaign and the importance of encouraging more people – particularly men – to feel comfortable talking about their mental health, and feel able to support friends or family through difficult times.”
The Duke had previously spoken to ex-England and Barcelona striker Gary Linekar behind the reasons for supporting Aston Villa. He said: “A long time ago at school I got into football big time. I was looking around for clubs.
“All my friends at school were either Man United fans or Chelsea fans, and I didn’t want to follow the run-of-the-mill teams. I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments.”
