British Royal Family News find that for those wondering, a whole lot of people tuned in to watch Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey on CBS on Sunday night.
To be exact, about 17 million people from across the United States tuned in to hear Harry and Meghan detail the difficulties they experienced before they decided to pull the plug on their working relationship with the royal family. Here’s what you need to know.
British Royal Family News: Over 17 Million People Watched Oprah’s Interview With Prince Harry And Meghan Markle On CBS
According to new reports, preliminary numbers from the Nielsen company say that an estimated 17.1 viewers watched Oprah’s special broadcast with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the United States.
These numbers of course don’t include the UK ratings on the ITV network and the 68 other countries expected to broadcast the interview from all around the world.
Nielsen said it had the largest audience for any prime-time entertainment special so far this television season.
In the interview, Meghan said she considered suicide, while Harry said he and his family were “trapped” in an oppressive institution.
The British press, meanwhile, has blasted the royal couple for airing out their family’s dirty laundry to the world. The Daily Mail‘s physical front page featured an all-caps headline “MEGHAN ACCUSES PALACE OF RACISM” alongside a closely cropped picture of Markle’s face.
Dan Wooton, a former editor at The Sun and now a talk radio host said, “Harry and Meghan have blown up their relationship with the Royal Family, especially Charles and William, in the Oprah tell-all. Hard to see a reconciliation given they have branded the royals racist and uncaring. Surely they should now renounce their titles as Duke and Duchess?”
Meanwhile, royal commentator Peter Hunt says that there has been so much damage done by this interview, that it might take a miracle for the British Royal Family to ever bounce back from it.
He says that the claim of racism within the walls of Buckingham Palace will endure for a very long time to come.
Hunt wrote in The Spectator, “No Palace spin can erase it from the collective memory. The charge is that one of Harry’s relatives asked him, when Meghan was pregnant with Archie, ‘how dark his skin might be when he is born’. Harry told Oprah the conversation ‘was awkward’ and left him ‘a bit shocked’. The couple haven’t revealed the identity of the royal who posed the question — a toxic one for an institution that provides the constitutional head of state for a multicultural United Kingdom and fifteen other countries. Just as damaging is Harry’s hurt at his family’s failure to come to his aid and condemn some of the media coverage that was racist, when his relationship with Meghan was made public.”
