Bradley Cooper has gone on the record to say that Hollywood’s award season is “meaningless” to him even though almost everyone in the industry takes it quite seriously. Here’s what he has to say.
In a conversation with actor Anthony Ramos, who also starred in the hit film A Star is Born alongside Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, the two of them talked about their careers and that’s when award season was brought up.
Bradley Cooper Says Award Season Is Meaningless
Anthony started it off by saying, “It’s funny, you hit awards season and it can be easy for us to make it about individual people. But on set, you have your call sheet, and even though you have your leads, it’s a team effort. The grips, the director of photography — that movie is not happening without them. Everyone is the star of that movie.”
When Anthony said that “for whatever reason, we choose to single people out at a certain time of year,” that’s when Bradley chimed in with, “That awards season stuff is a real test. It’s set up to foster that mentality. It’s quite a thing to work through, and it’s completely devoid of artistic creation. It’s not why you sacrifice everything to create art, and yet you spend so much time being a part of it if you’re, in quotes, ‘lucky enough to be a part of it.’ It’s ultimately a great thing because it really does make you face ego, vanity, and insecurity. It’s very interesting and utterly meaningless.”
Of course, it didn’t take very long for Bradley Cooper’s fans and critics to weigh in on his comments. Quite a few said, “I don’t really care for him but even I can admit that he is talented and should’ve had an Oscar by now. He has been nominated how many times already?” along with, “He is right that awards are meaningless, but he is doing this only because he wants to win and nobody takes him seriously.
