We’ve been talking about him a lot lately as he has been quite outspoken on social issues. However, there’s more. Enes Kanter is officially a US citizen now and to celebrate he legally changed his name to Enes Kanter Freedom.

The Swiss-born, Turkish-raised 29-year-old tweeted a video of his new citizenship as he recited the oath with his new name. He also tweeted a clip of him and Tucker Carlson, in which he is receiving a lot of flack for even being on his show. Enes Kanter Freedom spoke about why he was so excited and called it the “best day of his life”,

“Here [in the US] there is freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, freedom of the press. I didn’t have any of those with Turkey.“

You can see him reciting the oath to become a citizen in the clip below. It’s a powerful moment and to see someone so excited to become a citizen of The United States of America is incredible.

I am proud to be an American.
    Greatest nation in the world.

Enes has been very vocal about the NBA’s ties to China and a huge critic of superstar LeBron James, calling him out repeatedly over the last few months. It’s this voice that has made him a target for many and he doesn’t seem to mind.

In 2019, Turkish authorities filed an international arrest warrant for Kanter, accusing him of having links with groups involved in a failed 2016 coup. He denied the allegations. His name has also been blocked on Chinese social media and streams of Celtics games were canceled after he referred to President Xi Jinping as a ‘brutal dictator’.

While he’s proud and excited to be a citizen, there are droves of people who seem to think he cares what they think. The comments are filled with people hating on this man, but he’s doing what he wants to do. Congratulations to Enes Kanter Freedom for becoming a citizen!
